    First, I want to mention that I definitely support this project to improve our community. I do worry there might be a parking spot squeeze on street cleaning days when half the neighborhood parking spots disappear for street sweeping. Any possibility we can move to one-a-month street sweeping instead of twice-a-month? I think that's what Cambridge does. It feels like we are sweeping streets more than necessary and constantly being forced to move our cars for the sweepers. Thanks!

    Thank you for your comment and question. As part of the implementation of this pilot project, we are not looking at changing the street sweeping schedule. Throughout the pilot we’ll analyze how the quick-build bus and bike lanes work and seek input from residents, businesses, and users. Collecting and analyzing this information will allow us to understand what’s working well about the pilot design and what changes we may want to make to the street design when Washington St. is repaved and we have the opportunity to implement a longer-term redesign of the corridor.

    How will those with mobility impairments reach the buses if they are not stopping directly at the curb?

    Buses will continue to stop directly at the curb for riders to board the bus.

    If you are removing over 50% of parking, will the Argenziano school parking lot be open to residents for overnight parking, including snow emergency.

    Thank you for this question. Using school parking lots is not an option at this time. We’ve found that when residents park in the school lots during snow emergencies, it takes more time to clear the snow from the lots, and results in extended school closures and additional days out of school for kids. We will look for other solutions to this, if parking during snow emergencies proves to be a challenge this winter.

    Will there be compromises regarding bicycle safety in favor of parking or will these projects put safety first and implement protected bike lanes along the whole corridor as a priority?

    As Somerville is a Vision Zero city, the safety of bicyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users is a top priority. Somerville roads occupy approximately 1 square mile of our total 4 square mile area, and we continually work to humanize these roadway spaces and reclaim these public areas dedicated to single occupant vehicles for safe and efficient low-carbon mobility modes. 

    In this pilot project, the City’s goals are to improve bus mobility to help protect the health and safety of bus riders during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the pilot implementation of this project is planned to implement bike lanes between Dane Street and Webster Ave. The City will be monitoring the performance of this pilot and collecting data - both in the form of traffic volumes and speeds as well as input from residents and users of the Washington St. corridor. This information will allow us to understand what works well and what needs to be changed when Washington St. is repaved and we have the opportunity to implement a longer-term redesign of the corridor.
