Rendering from the Winter Hill Neighborhood Plan

Ground Floor Activity Survey

The City of Somerville and the Winter Hill Civic Advisory Committee are looking for your ideas! What kind of activities and businesses are you excited to see in the future Temple Square redevelopment when the Star Market is redeveloped?

There are many elements of the redevelopment that are still to be determined. Whether or not the corner properties will be redeveloped, what sizes of retail spaces there will be on 299 Broadway, and how the indoor community space will be managed, are all questions that do not yet have answers. Given there is a lot of unknown, we are asking you to think broadly about what would make Winter Hill’s business district more complete for you.

As you answer these few questions, please consider including what you'd like to see in terms of:

  • Retail businesses (grocery, bank, clothing store, etc.)

  • Service businesses (salon, tax advisor, fitness studio, dentist, etc.)

  • Places to get together (restaurant, café, dance class, meeting space, etc.)

  • Other Activities and Outcomes that are important to you (places that promote immigrant cultures, places that pay employees well, places that are toddler friendly, keeping existing businesses strong, etc.)

A note - the ground floor activities in storefronts along Broadway and Temple Street will need to meet the City's list of allowed uses for a Pedestrian Street. In general, the defined "Pedestrian Streets" are intended to foster lively districts and support walk-in business by changing the range of allowed uses on the ground floor. Use categories allowed on the ground floor of Pedestrian Streets include arts and creative enterprise, food & beverage service, retail sales, and civic & institutional uses (see Table 4.4.14 on page 224 of the Somerville Zoning Ordinance).
